How to Perform a Scream? (I Keep a Roar in My Mouth)
takes place within Heimsuchungen / Hauntings, the 2026 annual program of Bärenzwinger Berlin. The program reflects on the site’s unresolved histories and its transformation from a former bear enclosure to a municipal gallery, moving toward its 10th anniversary in 2027. Structured in several acts and loosely inspired by Rilke’s Duino Elegies, the program asks how absence, memory, and loss can enter new contexts rather than remain preserved as static history.

As part of Act I: For staying is nowhere, the workshop activates voice, scream, and roar as tools of resistance, memory, and collective disobedience. Through vocal exercises, writing, spoken word, polyphony, whispering, trembling, naming, and misnaming, participants explore the mouth as a site where history begins before it is disciplined into language. The scream becomes a counterstructure to dominant narratives: something stored in the tongue, held in the throat, and released as sound, fracture, refusal, and collective practice.
